Abstract

The thesis entitled An Analytical Study of Sariputta Thera’s Kalyãnamittãaimed to study the meaning, characteristics, kinds, significance and the benefit of companying with the true friend or Kalyãnamittã and focused on Ven. Sariputta’s nature of being true friend.

The results of the research were found that Kalyãnamittã is a person who gives good advices and suggestions of the path of wholesome or unwholesome, the benefit or not benefit. The Kalyãnnamittã is not mentioned only for the generous person but also for the surroundings that encourage for learning and developing to the right understanding. The true nature of Kalyãnamittã can be known by teachings as: the teaching must benefit for one and other, being a man of consistency and must be a person who does whatever being said by him. (He does what he says and he says what he does). There are two kinds of Kalyãnamittã: the secular and spiritual. Again, the Kalyãnamittã is the important key to all stages of success: at the beginning, middle and advanced of the religious life. A true friend can be observed through good mind change. That is to say, if one accompanies with any person unwholesomeness is arisen and wholesomeness is deactivated, such a person is not a true Kalyãnamittã in Buddhism.

The nature of Ven. Sariputta’s Kalyãnamittã can be mentioned in two aspects: he was a true friend for himself and a true friend for others or social. He was a true – friend for himself. It was said that, he rejoiced to eradicate all defilements and cultivate wholesomeness. He cultivated such as sincerity, gratitude, honesty, Brahmavihãra or the fourfold stages of mind, Sangahavatthu or the fourfold bases of sympathy, Sappurisa – dhamma or the sevenfold quality of a good man, Ariyadhana or the sevenfold noble treasures and so on until he attained Arahant. He was a true – friend for social or others; it can be mentioned in two aspects: being a true friend to the general people and specific person. He was a true friend to his mother and the non-Buddhists who are interested in Buddhism. He was ready to have a Dhamma conversation with them. The questions-answers and good advices leading to the progress of their lives were given by him. He became the eminent model of Kalyãnamittã in Buddhism as clearly appeared in the Curanidesa, Mahãnidesa and Patisambhidãmagga. This is the most important role of Ven. Sariputta’s Kalyãnamittã.
