Abstract

This thesis is aimed at analytical studying the concept of life prolongation  in Buddhism Influencing the life prolonging ritual in Surin Province. The objectives of the studies are 1) to study the concept of age  prolongation  in Theravada Buddhist scripturs 2) to study the life prolonging ritual in Surin province 3) to analytically study the concept of life prolongation  in Buddhism Influencing prolonging ritual in Surin province.

The findings are as follows;

According to Buddhism , human beings have their own Kamma, and their birth or death come from four causes namely,(1) Ayukkkhaya Marana i.e. dying caused by the end of lifespan (2) Kammakkhaya Marana i.e. dying caused by deeds (3) Ubhayakkhaya Marana i.e. caused by the end of lifespan and deeds (4) Upacchedaka Marana i.e. dying caused by accident. However, human being’ lives can be extended by following activities in the ceremony called Life Prolonging as follows : (1) giving Dana (2) psychic power (3) knowing the principle of life leading (4) Kamma power (5) chanting the holy stanza (6) practice the Four Part of accomplishment (7) practice the heedfulness (8) determination (9) radiation of loving-kindness (10) economization in consuming

The ceremonies  of getting  rid of bad luck and life prolongation in Surin province are held in various races of  Surin people such as Khmer,Kui, and Lao.  Each lineage has its own ritual. From the studies of ceremonies of bad luck getting-rid and life prolonging of three Bhikkhus in surin province i.e. 1)  Phraphimonpattanakarn  (Puan  Varamanggaro), Wat  Mongdolrat, Mueang Dustruct  2) Phrakhruaphassarathammakhun  [Bunrod], Wat Kokkrom,  phanom Dong Rak District  3) Phrakruphattanasarakhun (Sor), Wat satthathambankham, chom Phra District, it is found that even their performances are different in styles, bur remain the same in the belief based on the power of verses of protection or safe-guard (Paritta) in Buddhism.

From the analytical studies the concept of age prolongation  in Buddhism Influencing on the getting rid of bad luck and life prolonging ceremonies, it is found that age prolongation  is derived from the original belief in spirits and holy things, Brahma-Hinduism, and Buddhism. At the present time, people like to have the getting rid of bad luck and life prolonging ceremonies with Bhikkhus than the ordinary persons due to the knowledge and respect. The getting rid of bad luck and age prolonging ceremonies in Surin province provide various principles of Buddhist teachings to the people such as Kamma, Katannukatavedi, and Apamada, Besides, the getting rid of bad luck and age prolonging ceremonies in Surin province bring us various values, for example, self-value i.e. having participated the ceremonies, they felt happy in mind due to the meritorious action in giving, observing the precept, and mental development.
