Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to study riddles on death tradition of Northeastern Thailand extracted from Northeast literature concerning death tradition. The data gathering for primary source was done through Tipitaka texts and interviews from local wise men. The secondary resource was gathered from related Buddhist documents  and research work on death tradition. The study anticipated that death tradition would be sustained and practiced by younger generations in a proper way.

            The study results revealed that      

             1) The significant characteristic of riddles was formed with Buddhist concept on impermanence and changing of substances perceived by Thai Buddhist from the past up to the present time.

             2) The framework of death tradition performed was the model for Thai people in Northeastern area and was transferred to the younger generations with taking Buddhist concepts in terms of riddles.

 3) Northeastern riddles on death tradition were in oral tradition.

             According to the analysis on death tradition practice in term of riddles, the embedded content involved belief based on Buddhism deeds. There was an explanation on blessings, sins, estates after death, heaven and hell. The performance following the content in the riddles led to merit making for the dead persons. This precisely  showed the Buddhism influence in setting up riddles.

            Concerning the value perceived from riddles studied, it was found out that ceremonies on death tradition and funeral follows the content from the riddles that embedded the strong belief  on Buddhism. This kind of value had been still practiced since in the past to the present time. It also revealed that people in the northeast of the country have continued their practice on death tradition because of the concept and performance influenced from the riddles guided them to keep on the tradition the same way their ancestors did in the past.
