Abstract

The objectives of this research are:- 1. to study a concept of beauty in Theravadã Buddhist scriptures; 2. to study the Dhammas on beauty in Theravadã Buddhist scriptures; 3. to study the application of the Dhammas on beauty for daily lives in the present societies.

From the study, it is found that the concept of beauty in Theravadã Buddhist Scriptures is derived from the Buddhist teachings on beauty which emphasize inner beauty or spiritual beauty. It is the beauty that has been developed according to the Buddha’s teachings. It is the knowledge found by the Buddha and bought to be thought to the human beings in the world for 45 years. So, the concept of beauty arises from having the Dhammas in mind or inner beauty and then appearing outside. At the present, it is found that people in societies evaluate the beauty in ways variable from the truth of life. That is to evaluate the outer beauty. That is the physical beauty, not the spiritual one. Such the beauty is tainted with the defilements and cravings. This fact is to hide the truth which mainly consists of selfishness, personal benefits, deception, and insincerity.

Regarding the Dhammas on beauty leading to the beauty, they are Appamãda (Heedfulness), Khanti (Patience), Soracca (Gentleness), Sikkhãttaya (The Threefold Trainging), Brahmavihãras (the Four Noble Sentiments), Sangahavatthus (The Principle of Kindly Treatment), Pancasilas (The Five Precepts), Pancadhammas (The Five Ennobling Virtues), and Kalyãnamittatãs (Good Friendship).

The Dhammas on Beauty can be applied in daily life. The people who practice the mentioned Dhammas can live their lives carefully with mindfulness. They can be patient
and calm towards the temptations. Moreover, they can have moralities in their minds, and they are peaceful with right views and with wisdom to consider the causes and the effects in every matter according to the truth. They can also have loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and neutrality. Besides, they can have charity, kindly speech, help societies, even and equal treatment, and good friends, all of which are inner beauties of great and true value, firmness, and being beloved to all people in the world.
