The Study of Bāhusacca in Theravāda Buddhism 2010

Abstract

This  research is  of  3  objectives,  namely  :-    (1) to   study  Bāhusacca  in  Theravāda  Buddhist’s texts.   (2)  to  study  the Dhamma relationship of  Bāhusacca       (3) to  study  the  Bāhusacca  to be applied the development of life in the  present societies.  

                   From the study,  it is found that :-

                   In the Buddhist scriptures Bāhusacca is of the meaning as Bahusuta and Suta all of which are of the meaning as the state of the one who listens much, knows much    and has much experience.     Bāhusacca  is one of  the auspicious ways of growth to               the learned people.

                   There are  5  compositions  of  Bāhusacca,  They are  (1)  The most study        (2) ) The most  rememberance   (3) )  The most activeness   (4) The learning by heart        (5)  The thinking over of the theory.

                   Bāhusacca is of two types namely :-

                   (1)  The lay peoples’ Bāhusacca

                   (2)  The monks’ Bāhusacca

                   The  Bāhusacca in the Vinayapiñaka in the base of the Buddha’s enacts of    the  7  precepts for traing.   

                   In Suttantapiñaka it is said that  Bāhusacca is a good matter for the one with  Bahusuta (the one who has well heard).  The Paccekabuddha (the well heard one) said  that a person should associate with the Bāhusacca friend.   Ven. Mahā Kappina Thera quoted as stanza  the meaning of  which is the person should wish to be the learned person and be the one who has heard much and who can carry out  his own business successfully with his wisdom.  

                  Bāhusacca  mentioned  in  Abhidhammapiñaka as the state  is having good friends, Faith,  Precepts  and having heard much.

                  In the commenties,  it is said that  Bāhusacca is one of the 38 Blessings.

                  There are 21 Doctrinal principles about  the Bāhusacca,  and there are  4  Doctrinal principles supporting the Doctrinal principles the Bāhusacca.   Thus,  there are 25 Doctrinal principles regarding Bāhusacca.

                  The  application of  Bāhusacca to the development of  the present social    lives is  to train  oneself  to  be  of ability in studying the worldly matters  and     the Doctrinal matters.
