The Effectiveness of the Pre-Pali Exam Tutorial Project Run by the VII Sangha Region

Abstract

This thesis is of three objectives: 1) to study the context of educational management on the section of Pali-Pariyattidhamma run by the VII Ecclesiastical Region, 2) to explore the Pre-Pali Exam Tutorial Project run the VII Sangha Region and 3) to investigate the effectiveness of the Pre Pali Exam Tutorial Project run by the VII Sangha Region. The research was conducted by qualitative research method and all data were collected by the in – depth interview. The results can be summarized as follows.

According to the educational management on the section of Pali-Pariyattidhamma run by the VII Sangha Region, it is managed in line with the Thai Monastic Order. In each province, the monks have organized their own education. The problems in education of the VII Sangha Region, learners are not interested in learning Pali language because they are learning other courses. In addition, it has an unfavorable learning environment, discrete learning, lack of teachers and teachers inexperienced in teaching, etc.

 

In 2547 B.E., the VII Ecclesiastical Region have organized the Pre-Pali Exam Tutorial Project and supported by one month salary of the VII region sangha officers in order to solve the problem at the schools and increase the quality of the students. In each academic year, there will be three sessions of the Pre-Pali Exam Tutorial Project, namely, the first round of the Pali Scholar from level 6 to level 9 and the duration of training took 50 days before the exam. The second round is for the primary of Pali Scholar from level 1-2 to level 5 and the duration of training took 20 days before the exam. The third round is organized for the re-examiners from level 1-2 to level 5 and it took 15 days before the exam.  

Regarding the effectiveness of the Pre-Pali Exam Tutorial Project run by the VII Sangha Region, students have increased understanding of Pali language and passed the examination of the primary Pali Scholar to the advanced Pali Scholar, especially there were nine monks in the VII Ecclesiastical Region can passed the examination of Pali Scholar Level 9.   It can be said that they have good internal and external factors to support. The seven beneficial or advantageous conditions: 1) suitable abode, 2) suitable resort, 3) suitable speech, 4) suitable person, 5) suitable food, 6) suitable climate and 7) suitable posture. All the conditions mentioned above have made an accomplishment to the Pre Pali-Exam Tutorial Project run by the VII Sangha Region.
