Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the current conditions and problems of holistic health of the elderly; 2) to study the methods for promoting the holistic health of the elderly; 3) to present the promoting the holistic health of the elderly by using Buddha Paritta.

The research results revealed that based on the study of the current conditions and problems with the holistic health of the elderly, it was found that the elderly simply live with their family, like to perform meritorious deeds at temples, especially on the day of the Buddha, to hold the eight precepts, most of them do agriculture by making a small farm to make money for their own income, do not want to disturb their children, like being in their own homes, are respected by people in the community. The holistic physical health is normal and they are able to do their routines on a daily basis. Yet they have problems in the deterioration of the body such as joint degeneration, wrinkled skin and body, sensory perception decreases and illnesses.

The methods to strengthen the holistic health of the elderly are that the elderly have a desire to join the activities with their children in order to improve mental health and physical health which can be improved by the better mind. In addition, service providers in promoting elderly health must play a role in providing health news, health screening, health promotion, arranging the health promoting activities for the elderly and introducing various chants in the ritual of Buddha Paritta chanting, causing the betterment of the physical and mental health.

In regards to the model for promoting the holistic health of the elderly by using Buddha Paritta, it was suggested that Buddha Paritta is a morale building ceremony, is chanted for security of life, happily living, a normal life and making people aware of their heedfulness. The chant is also considered in terms of its effectiveness or benefits in the treatment of mental conditions, chronic physical diseases that require a long treatment and diseases that require rehabilitation. This makes the mind strong and willing to fight against various obstacles for survival until they can restore their physical condition to normal conditions.
