Abstract

The research entitled “The Buddhist Environment Conservation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej : An Analysis Based on Buddhist Principles” consisted of three objectives: 1) to study environmental conservation in Buddhism,
2) to study environmental conservation of His Majesty the King, and 3) to integrate environmental conservation according to Buddhist ways.

The results of the study were as follows:

1) The Buddha had many ways for environmental conservation by regulating the rule on not destroying environment such as soil, water, soil, air etc. and by teaching his followers to see the values of environment, to behave in an environmentally friendly manner, to rely on environment for living, and to let good environment make one’s life live according to the middle way in order to have a healthy life, good immunity, and stable mind to the path leading to liberation depending on each one’s root condition.

2) His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej had many ways for conserving environment such as soil, water, forest, air etc. His ways for conservation were on the method of keeping and maintaining the ones that were already in good conditions. His Majesty the King had ways to restore an environment, that was in a bad condition that would cause problems or pollution to human, animals and plants, to be better and back to its normal condition and to manage an environment to be consistent with the needs of people and the development of the country through his philosophy that was from his studying of many science, his royal duties and his remarkable talent that was from his great merits in the past. Therefore, his ways became the unique identity that were admired and interested by intellectuals around the world.

3) The integration of the Noble Eightfold Path, the Threefold training with the His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej’s philosophy resulted in ways for perfect environmental conservation that could help conserving, restoring and enhancing environment efficiently and carefully. The responsible person for conserving environment also benefited from this as there would be a moral principle for him/her to hold onto, an immune for him/her to good behavior, and to protect himself/herself from doing bad deeds. The achievements of the work would also come out in good quality resulting in the condition of “good man with outstanding work and morality”.

The research on “Ways for environmental conservation of His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej”, the researcher specified the structure as a guideline for work operation as follows: 1) Planning by applying Ariyasacca IV or the Four Noble Truths consisting of problems, causes of problems, cessation of problems, and the path leading to the cessation of problems; 2) Ideology of work by applying Raja-saigahavatthu V or virtues making for national integration, this considered as the purpose for conserving, restoring and enhancing environment to be in a normal condition; 3) Working principle by applying Santosa III or Contentment as a standpoint to always keep working in a good way; and 4) Method of work by applying Magga or Noble Eightfold Path or the Threefold training to keep the work moving forward according to the determined ideology
