A Teaching Process of Insight Meditation Based on Buddhist Psychology for Different Ages

Abstract

 

 

The three objective of this research were 1) to study the Buddha’s method of teaching based on Buddhism principles for different ages in meditation center 2) to study a teaching process of insight meditation based on Buddhist psychology for different ages and 3) to present a teaching process of insight meditation based on Buddhist psychology for different ages. A qualitative research method was employed and the results of the Buddha’s method of teaching based on Buddhism principles documents study were used as guideline for the area surveying and observing. The data was collected from Buddhist meditation master, youth practitioners (age not over 18 years) and adult practitioners (age over 18 years) by in-depth-interview and focus group discussion. Data were analyzed by content analysis and synthesis .Findings of Research were as follows:  

             1.  The  Buddha’s  method  of  teaching  based  on  Buddhism  principles  for different ages in meditation center include

                  1)  Topics  and  contents:  Starting  from  easy  to  difficult  level understanding story, comparable empirical real stories as examples, to point out the cause and effect of the story and the benefits that the listener can use to suit the different ages

                  2)  Main teaching methods and styles for different ages consist of

                     (1)  Clearly explanation

                      (2)  Motivation to conform and inspiration to brave

                      (3To have interactions

                      (4To set rules for learning

                      (5Matching with the intrinsic nature of a person and ripeness of spiritual faculties / wisdom of the listener

                      (6Teaching to follow

 

 

             2A teaching process of insight meditation based on Buddhist psychology for different ages covering various issues include          

                  1Content used to teach: in youth groups will emphasize the content of the principles rather than the dharma practice; conversely, adult groups will give more proportion of dharma practice than the content of principle

                  2Teaching steps: In youth groups will lead by using group activities, single activity and supplemented by Dharma lecture respectively while the adult group starts with a single activity, Dharma lecture and group activities respectively. Methods and techniques that used as important activities for the adult group in the general meditation center are praying, morning-evening chanting, mediation, listening to Dharma lectures and verbal closure

                  3)  Measurement and evaluation: The measurement and evaluation in youth group depends on the discretion of the lecturer or mentor because there are various methods according to the development of children's learning at each age. In general, measurement and evaluation are divided into 3 steps: during the activities, activities ending and follow-up after repeated activities. The measurement and evaluation in adults are the examination of experience meditation, emotional perception, behavior observation and self-assessment from mediation master’s feedback

             3.  A teaching process of insight meditation based on Buddhist psychology for different ages in the overall picture consists of 5 steps in the following order:

                  15 morality for instructors are (1) Teaching in order (2) Giving reasons (3) Having mercy (4) Not to care a bribery  (5) Not to affect others

                  2)  5 suitable age group, classifying learners according to age and Dharma practice experience are 3 sessions of youth group; aged below 12 years old, aged 12-15 years old, aged 13 to 18 years old and 2 sessions of adult group; working age and elderly

                  3The selection of appropriate content according to the learner's age

 

 

                  4Teaching operation: In youth group use Dharma lecture, group activities and single activities. There are 9 techniques in adult group as follows (1) consistent with the intrinsic nature of a person (2) Clearly explanation (3) Starting from easy to difficult and wide to deep (4) Allowing to ask back (5) motivating to believe in (ö) inspiration to brave (7)slow learners can catch up (8) Self-practicing (9) creating participation in learning

                  5There are 3 stages of measurement and evaluation which are before training, during training and at the end of training. There are 3 methods of measurement and evaluation which are (1) self- measurement and evaluation by keeping track of emotions (2) the examination of experience meditation and feedback from mediation master  (3) measurement tools is a measure of satisfaction and opinion.
