Abstract

    This thesis entitled “A Study of the Skillful Means of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana in Teaching People to be Moral according to Buddhist Principles”. There are three objectives as follows: 1) to study the history and teaching of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana, 2) to study the skillful means of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana in teaching people to be moral according to Buddhist principles, and 3) to present the guidelines application of the skillful means of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana in teaching people of Thai Sangha. This study is a qualitative research methodology by collecting data from In-depth interview and then analyze data by analyzing the content and descriptive presentation.

This study found that Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana (Phrakhru Phatthanakitchanurak) at Wat Phra Phutthabat Huai Tom, he was born in Han Ko sub-district, Li district, Lamphun province that there were eight siblings as the same parents, his family was poor farmers. Lifestyle of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana was hardship lifestyle. The important teachings of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana was belief teaching. Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana who was promoted hill tribes to stop worshiping beliefs about ghosts, sin, corrupt career. He taught to practice by going temple for making merit  and cultivating goodness in community that realized to donate, including giving, sacrificing and living by adhering to five precepts.

                  Kruba Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana had still stratagem and teaching people towards having morality according to Buddhism principle by applying the principle of Buddhadhamma to work  as a simple matters and close to us such as four Iddhipãdã in order to adapt to work, love work, diligent working, responsible for work and knowing ponder scrupulously.  The principle and practice coupled with development in order to achieve prosperity both thoughts, intellect and living, including the four sublime states of mind, five precepts. The principle of participation, harmony, four Sanghahavatthus, four Iddhipãdã. These principles were interested to community in developing community in order to be strong and he used stratagem in Dhamma propagation by storytelling to make villagers for easy understanding that spoke Karen language or the language of hill tribes.

                 The skillful means and teaching people of Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana in beliefs. Kruba Chaiya wongsaphatthana attempted to teach hill tribes to understand the Buddha’s teaching by applying various stratagems such as belief in village center (Jai Ban), belief in dress were beliefs that he had shown Dhamma to Karen and understand the Dhamma principles and take to follow that took Karen to thinking change and the way of life had changed clearly. Reasoning based on the truth, making participatory activities in order to allow the villagers to do the Buddhist activities together that will be caused love and harmony in the village.
