Abstract

The thesis entitled “An Analysis on Motivation of Buddhists in Dhamma Practice at Watmatchantikaram Bangsue Bangkok” has three objectives: 1) to study the motivation in Buddhism and motivation theory in modern science, 2) to study the Dhamma practical activities of Watmatchantikaram Bangsue Bangkok, and 3) to analyze Buddhists’ motivation in Dharma practice at Watmatchantikaram Bangsue Bangkok. This is a qualitative research done by studying documentaries and in-depth interview.

In the research, it was found that the motivation in Buddhism are not explicitly defined In the Tripitaka but in the commentaries can be referred to craving or demand which are similar to the meaning of motives in modern science where a person’s causes of motivation are of thee need in which the wholesome need is called Chanda; this motivates a person’s making decision in Dhamma practice at Watmatchantikaram, the first floor of Pariyattidhamma School in every Buddhist day and Sunday. In this practice, Ānāpānasati technique is assigned through the contemplation of ‘Buddho’. When it comes to the motivation in following of Buddhists’ Dhamma practice at Watmatchantikaram, six kinds of motivation are found as follows: 1) Āvāsa-sappāya 2) Gocara-sappāya 3) Bhassa-sappāya                 4) Puggala-sappāya 5) Utu-sappāya 6) Iriyāpatha-sappāya. As for the Bhojana-sappāya, it is not a factor that affects the motivation of Buddhists’ Dhamma practice at Watmatchantikaram.
