Abstract

 The aims of this research were: 1) to study the service mind of the personnel in higher education institutions; 2) to study the dhamma principles to promote the service mind in the case study of Sangha College; 3) to integrate the service mind of such personnel with the dhamma principles. The qualitative research methodology and fieldwork were used to conduct this study. The data were interpreted by using the descriptive statistics, content analysis, document analysis, interview and content summary. The research results were as follows:

    In regards to the service mind of personnel in higher education institutions, service recipients are provided with the honest service and help until they achieved their aims, earned the highest benefits. This effectiveness of service created the service user’s impression together with feeling of equal treatment, timing, adequateness and continuity raising the service progress with loving kindness, polite and gentle service and also willingness in helping the service users with their full capacity.

    The dhamma principles supporting the service mind were all elements of the IV Sangahavatthu principle (sagahavatthu, bases of social solidarity) composed of 1) generosity, 2) kindly speech, 3) rendering services and 4) equal treatment; the Brahmavihara-Dharma (Pāli: brahmavihāra, the sublime states of the mind) composed of 1) mettā (loving kindness), 2) karunā (compassion), 3) muditā (sympathetic joy) and 4) upekkhā (equanimity).

    The integration of the service mind and dhamma principles can be made by using 1) the principle of the equal treatment and rendering services in providing the service to all the service users equally; 2) generosity and compassion used for timely service as time is important in the service user needs; 3) equanimity and loving kindness used for providing the beneficial service to oneself and the others adequately and suitably; this is due to the living kindness as the virtue of the service provider; 4) rendering service and compassion for continuous service used to support the continuous and constant service as the compassion is the virtue of the service provider; 5) progressive services should be given based on the principles of kindly speech and sympathetic joy to create knowledge, understanding, goodwill and entertainment. This led to the acceptance in listening to the other suggestions to improve the quality of their work.
