Abstract

 

Abstract

               This research paper contains 2 objectives; 1) to study of Contemplation of the Body in Theravāda Buddhism and 2) to study of Rūpanāma or forms and name for Vipassana practice on contemplation of body section by collecting data from Buddhist scriptures; Tipitaka, commentaries, sub-commentaries and other concerned documents.  All these data are brought to compose in descriptive style finally checked by experts.

 

               From the study, it found that mindfulness foundation of contemplation on body is the way to practice of Vipassana Meditation through cultivating mindfulness and awareness observing the true state of all phenomena is related to the body included 6 groups; breathing in-out, body gestures, awareness, reflection on elements, reflection on loathsomeness, nine corpses. Contemplation on these six groups aims at training the mind to realize the true states of rise and fall of formative objects of mind as they really are.

            In the insight practice on mindfulness of contemplation on body section, practitioners have to train mindfulness and awareness investigating on realizing all emotions that appear every moment with clear and distracted mind, only observing without thinking. By observing all mental objects into the true states which rise and fall at present in each moment with faculty of wisdom without distracted thought, continuously concentrating on various groups of body contemplation, the mindfulness of observing forms and name will be obviously seen and go in advance in respect of insight knowledge. This will crystalize the rise and fall of body conditions as they really are to observers. The three common characteristics of body known as forms and name, appearing and disappearing quickly as its nature. Practitioners will see advantages and disadvantages of all conditions of body as well as its related
manners such as breathing in-out, standing, walking, sitting and so on, categorized as form or Rūpa and knower of all manners is or Nāma. Both of forms and name fall naturally into three common characteristics; changing, contradictory and non-self. The insight knowledge will function and purify the mind leading to the stream of noble path, fruits and Nibbana in the end.
