Abstract

   The three purposes of this research were as follows 1) to study the condition before death for the terminally ill patients, 2) to study the values of local Dharma preach for the terminally ill patients in Lanna, and 3) to analyze the values of local Dharma preach for the terminally ill patients in Lanna.   

   The study indicated that the condition before death for patients, most patients are anxious and fearful of death. In Buddhism, there were viewpoint that patients who were near death their telepathy will be pure or sad that was one part of Kamma result before death it was called “Asanñakam”. When the pure mind was affected to the heaven and the sad mind was affected to the hell. The mind before death, it can affect the world. This reason, the value of crisis patients had the opportunity to approach Buddhism by praying Buddhãnussati etc.  

   In Lanna, it had been applied this concept until leading to the rite for native preachment to terminal stage by bringing the native Dhamma “Mahãvibãka” in order to give a sermon in Dhammavatara melody for showing the patient to listen. That started from the homage to the Lord Buddhã, request for the five precepts and make offering dedicated to Buddhist monks with offering money or things to the monk who gives the sermon in order to the patients induce the mind to Buddhism. There was lighthearted in Dhamma and goodness that they had done the last before death in peace. Moreover, the hidden concept of releasing misery from bad deeds of the patients.

   The values of preachment to terminal stage in Lanna, It can be classified into 3 aspects, including 1) Mental value 2) Cultural value 3) Social value.
