Abstract

         The objectives of this research were (1) to study Parivasa-kamma (the probation of complete purification) for the Buddhist monks under interdiction in order to release out of Sanghadisesa Apatti, thirteen ecclesiastical offences which could be decided and purified only by a formal sangha-kamma, (2) to study the value of Parivasa-kamma to purify a Buddhist monk with Sanghadisesa Apatti, which were grievous offences of Sanghadisesa Apatti but they were remedied by Parivasa-kamma (the probation of complete purification), and (3) to study the management process of the Parivasa-kamma project by the committee of Pha Nokkhao Temple, Pha Nok khao sub-district, Phu Kradueng district, Loei province. This was the qualitative research and the data were collected by the in-depth interview of a total of 15 persons: four Buddhist monks who attended the Parivasa-kamma project, 4 monks of the ecclesiastical order who recited Ñatti-chatuttha-kamma, six lay persons as the project attendants, and a senior monk as the abbot of Pha Nokkhao Temple.

            The research findings were as follows

            1. Parivasa-kamma (the probation of complete purification) in Buddhism was appointed to two kinds of persons; the firse was a monk with Sanghadisesa Apatti to purify himself out of this grievous offence, and the second was a lay person who had been ordained as a Buddhist monk or who was from another religion.

            2. A Buddhist monk with Sanghadisesa Apatti was able to be remedied by Parivasa-kamma (the probation of complete purification). After the probation process, that monk like other Buddhist monks returned to the normal state with his clear and cheerful mind without worries. This was regarded as the value of Parivasa-kamma.

            3. In terms of formal activities and procedures, there were several tasks to be provided and arranged: the monks, the place and location, sponsorship, the budget, etc.
