The Follow up of Virtues and Ethics Training for Registered Nurses by Gilanadhamma Bhikkhus: A Case Study at the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, Navamindradhiraj University

Abstract

             The purposes of this study were: 1) to investigate results obtained from the Buddhist way of mental development of registered nurses, the Faculty of Medicine, Vajira Hospital, Navamindradhiraj University, 2) to follow up holistic nursing service in a Buddhist way of registered nurses. The research was conducted by using a survey research which is a quantitative research. The population in this study was the 875 registered nurses who obtained the training from Gilanadhamma Bhikkus.     A sample of 275 registered nurses was obtained by using the Taro Yamane method. A simple random sampling method of 275 samples was drawn from volunteers of registered nurses in 46 wards of the Vajira Hospital. A total of questionnaires about 275 sets were used in this study. Data collection and the questionnaires were done by the researcher. The questionnaires were comprised of 3 sections: 1) a general information of personal factors, 2) results from virtues and ethics training related to the uses of principle of four divine states (Brahmavihara) and the principle of four objects of sympathy (Sangahavatthu), and 3) comments and general recommendations. The data were analyzed by using arithmetic mean, percentage, and standard deviation (S.D.) and test of hypothesis by using t-test, F-test or       One-way ANOVA for 3 or more variable. In case of a statistical significance as found, the Least Significant Difference (LSD) was used to compare the difference in each pair. From the results of this study, it can be concluded as follows:

             1. From the results of training virtues and ethics of registered nurses, it was found that the Buddhist way of mental development has led to the use of the principle of four divine states in applying to job performance as a whole ( = 4.01, S.D. = 0.32) and also higher for each individual of holy abidings principle.              The decreasing order of arithmetic mean values were sympathetic joy, goodwill, compassion, and neutrality respectively.

             2. From the results of training virtues and ethics of registered nurses, it was found that in the follow up of holistic nursing service in a Buddhist way of registered nurses has led to the use of the principle of four objects of sympathy in applying to job performance as a whole ( = 4.06, S.D. = 0.33) and also higher for each individual of bases of social solidarity principle. The decreasing order of arithmetic mean values was even and equal treatment, kindly speech, doing good, and giving respectively.

             3.  The data analysis in a comparison with personal factors and a number of passed training times from the group of the Gilanadhamma Bhikkhus was found that there was an effect on the use of the principle of four divine states and the principle of four objects of sympathy.

               3.1 The difference in personal factors (classified by sex, age, marital status, education level, job experience, and workplace) was found that there were principles of four divine states (Brahmavihara) and principles of four objects of sympathy (Sangahavathu) were applied to look after the patients. From the point of common view it was found there was not statistically significant difference, which was not agreeable with a defined hypothesis exception of having an education level in using the principles of four divine states, and a marital status and an education level in using the principles of four objects of sympathy for looking after the patients according to the statistically significant under the define hypothesis.

               3.2 The difference in a number of passed training was found that the principles of four divine states and the principles of four objects of sympathy were used for looking after the patients from the point of common view it was found there was not statistically significant difference not agreeable with the defined hypothesis.
