Abstract

Abstract

              The  aim  of  this  researchis  to  study  and  analyze  Buddhist  literature  Phra  A - Non and  Kokila, which  is  based  on thestory  of  Phra A - Non Phutta - Anucha.  The three objectives of  the  study  are  as  follows : -  1. To  study  contents  and  factors of  the literary  work   2. To  Critical Study  the  principles and  doctrines  appeared  in  Phara  A - Non and  Kokila,  a  study  case  taken  from  Phra  A - Non  Phuttha – Anucha  story   3. To  analyze  values  of  the  literary  work  toward  Thai  society

              The  findings  of  the  study  were found  ;

 

            1. The case of  Phra A-Non and Kokila  was  a  literary  work,  which based on Buddhism, in  format  of  fictional  prose.  It  was  aimed  by the  author  for  giving  knowledge  of  Buddhist  moral  to  the  readers. The  author  wrote  in  love  story  style  that  could  lead  the  readers  into  the  truthfulness.  It  said  that  was  the story of a woman who fell in love with Phra A-Non, and she decided to be a Buddhist nun because she would like to be close with Phra A-Non. Finally, the love was ended           by disappointment, after that she accessed into the truthfulness which bought her to success in the Buddhist  saint. Not only would the writer take the Dharma of Buddhism into the main plot, but also he added the primary and superior of Buddhist doctrine in the elements of literature. Description and conversation of characters were in the forms of narration, description, instruction and figure of speech for conducting the meaning of story was to be clearly and easily understood, in kind of the relationship with the role of characters. Main idea of the story was pointed about the misery of human-beings. It was the cause from delusion or ignorance in a number of illusions. And, the ending of the literary work was used by twist ending. Kokila accessed to Buddhist saint in Buddhism which reflected the truth of nature rule of the three characteristics of existence in ordinary people that was changed by causation and environment.

2. The  Buddhist  doctrines  in  the  literary work  were  found  that  had  2  points. The first  was  mandane which were mentioned a Sangkhara existence (Kamma formations), defilement, loving constituent, imperfection : all that is fire - like hot; being Dhukkha or suffering resulting from being apart from or/and unable to possess the beloved ones ; holding the Dhamma as refuse ; generosity ; sexual intercourse        as well as nationality and clan. The second was supermandane, which was Dhammajakkappawattana Sutta, that the readers should consider and bring it to practice for benefit in ordinary life. Moreover, it was reflected that the truth which Buddha became enlighten, and disclosed to the divine and all human - beings.   

    3. The  part  of  literature  value  for  Thai society ;  there are 3 parts as follows:

                        3.1 The intellectual  value :  a Dhamma teaching along with the Buddha methodology  that a composer used: conversational teaching, teaching by using a natural media and teaching by answering the questions including Dhamma knowledge such as teaching how to control one’s mind, love, harmfulness and life philosophy to denote an intellectual value for a reader including an ability to practice along with the potentiality of each personal.

                        3.2 The mental value : a value of literature as the art such as enlightening a human mind, solving an inappropriate condition of human life, purifying and heightening one’s mind and literature as a relief of sloth and grief that communicate an idea to make the reader clear and deep understanding including an impression and appreciation.

                        3.3 The literature value: It was found that it reflected two parts of values : a part  of  aesthetic flavor that a composer shown a grace of beauty application of melody in explaining a performer’s behavior and a part of analogy use that a composer used it to make the artist wording process to create the emotion, feeling and imagination to make an impression to a reader and see an image by analogy.
