Abstract

The purposes of this document research were (1) to study suffering resulting from separation in Theravada Buddhism, (2) investigate the Buddhist method to solve suffering problems resulting from separation, and (3) examine the application guidelines of the Buddhist method in solving the suffering problems resulting from the separation in Thai society. The results were as follows:

Indeed, the separation from loved ones, family members, relatives, properties, and other materials, is the cause of suffering of the humans who still adhere to animals, people, and bodies. This kind of suffering is difficult to run away from because it must occur and exist as stated in the four Noble Truths of suffering which results from the adherence. In addition, this is also a common characteristic which is natural and equal for all the living things. The suffering resulting from separation can be categorized into four groups: state of not being loved, separation from loved ones, resentment, and state of not receiving what one desires.

Besides, the suffering from separation is related to the Eight Worldly Conditions (Lokadhamma), which has existed from generation to generation in this world, and it is also a phenomenon in testing human mind if they can identify what suffering is and how to solve it.  Clever people will seek good friends such as The Buddha and Sangha, who will be able to show the light and how to ease their suffering. The suffering is complex; it starts from the rough to delicate part. All in all, the cause of suffering is to adhere to the Five Aggregates, which proceed on the basis of ignorance (Avijjã) Desires (Tanhã) attachment (Upãdãna) and action (Kamma).

One of the Buddhist principles applicable to determine how one suffers from suffering and how to solve it is to have consistent mindfulness in one’s daily life by means of the Five Constantly Reviewed Ideas, Contemplation of Death, the Eight Worldly Conditions, the Three Characteristics, Mindfulness on Breathing, Mindfulness on the Body, the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and Non-Negligence of Mindfulness on the one hand; all is based on the Triple Gem, moral Conducts, Wisdom and friends who know the path leading to the cessation of suffering on the other. Consequently, with good education and consistent practice, one is able to live happily with the suffering by way of wisdom of realization.

The Lord Buddha used the Buddhist Method the ease the suffering from separation in his era. For example, he relieved that pain of Mrs. Patajara who had lost her family, Mrs. Gisagotami who had lost her son, and many other people. He employed Dhamma medicine to nourish the mind to ease the suffering completely and sustainably.

In the case of those who encountered the suffering from separation in Thai social context, the results of field research showed that most of the suffering victims considered using the principles of the Five Constantly Reviewed Ideas and Contemplation of Death to solve suffering problems. No matter how hard the suffering is, if we follow the Buddhist moral code and have good friends, we will be able to manage the crisis and create an opportunity to train our minds aiming at making merit, which is in consistent with the recommendations of the Buddhist experts who have proposed this concept in order to solve the suffering according to the Buddhist moral code.
